Literature and the Weird

Esoteric Academic Sue Terry

Sue Terry : Esoteric Academic

Thanks for dropping in!

I’m an academic of weird and occult literature, a writer and teacher with an insatiable curiosity about ideas, language and culture. My research interests in esoteric and magical fiction lead me to explore radical notions, hidden realities, the underground and counterculture at the intersection of literature and the occult. My PhD research specialism is in female empowerment in the magical modernist fiction of twentieth - century women writers.

On these pages you’ll find out more about me, my research, Owl House Seminars and the courses I run, my conference talks and my shop Owl House Books, where I sell volumes from my own collection, carefully-curated treasures I’ve acquired along the way, esoteric and occult curios.

Studying literature gives us the skills to read between the lines and develop deep understanding in an era of information overload and ‘alternative facts’. Bringing people and ideas together is what I do. I love to share what I know and to talk about it all.

A lot!

I’m excited to discover ways in which texts of all kinds - novels, non-fiction, drama, fanzines, journals, popular culture - help us interpret paranormal phenomena to develop understanding of new concepts of consciousness.

I invite you to join me on a journey through weird and impossible literatures - come and be part of my esoteric/academic world!

“Popular culture is our mysticism. The public realm is our esoteric realm. The paranormal is our secret in plain sight. Weird.”
